Nine - "You didn't check her"

Mehlis wasn't sure how long she sat there, and thought she might have drifted to sleep briefly, before she heard voices in the hall, then the door opening. She sat up, opening her eyes as Garren, Lord Valin, Inacia and Andry came into the room.

"Xia's on her way," Garren said, coming over to kiss her. "How are you feeling?"

"A little less panicked," she admitted. "I think sitting in the quiet helped."

"Good," he nodded. "You do know I'm really happy about this, right?"

Mehlis smiled and nodded. "I'm sure you're ecstatic."

Garren kissed her again, then moved to sit behind his desk while everyone else found seats or stood near the window.

"When we came back, and were told you were here," Garren said. "We were told it was Lord and Lady Valin." He looked at Inacia and Mehlis turned to look at her as well.

"Yes, I finally gave in and married the arrogant bastard," Inacia said as Rial smirked.

"You left off the 'murderous' part," Rial said.

"Mostly because you haven't murdered anyone for over two years now," Inacia returned.

"Does Nahtan know?" Garren asked.

"I told him just before we left to bring you your dogs," Rial said. "Actually, I told Valry and let her tell him. Her Highness was quite happy about it."

"Did she ever get a puppy?" Mehlis asked. She remembered how much Valry had begged Nahtan for one.

"No, I'm afraid His Majesty held very firmly to not agreeing to one," Inacia said. "He seemed to think a puppy and two babies might be a little much right now."

"Next time," Rial nodded. "I'll help her convince him."

"I should have made it a condition to marry you that you'll stop antagonizing people," Inacia stated.

"Xia's bringing all five of the healers in at once," Garren said to Mehlis, grinning at Inacia and Rial. "Andry, feel free to ask them whatever."

Andry nodded. "I intend to. The older, dark haired woman with the long fingernails needs to go immediately."

"Is she that bad?" Mehlis asked him.

Andry nodded. "You'll see."

"How long are you staying for?" Mehlis asked them. She realized no one had mentioned how long their visit would be.

"Until Inacia has the dogs placed, the people trained in their commands and are comfortable with them," Rial said. "You're stuck with us for anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of months."

"You didn't have to come," Inacia told him.

"Like I'm going to let you wander between Valin and Theryl alone."

"Andry's with me."

"And while he's very good at insulting and belittling people, he's not a fighter by training."

"She came with five dogs," Garren pointed out. "And we could have sent a couple of Mo'ani back with her if she wanted. But the roads are safe, we haven't had any problems and Nahtan and Valry didn't run into anyone except farmers and herders on their way back to Valin."

Rial turned and looked at him. "You don't need to help this discussion, Lord Garren," he stated.

Garren chuckled and smiled at Mehlis. She smiled back, still not feeling completely well, though the banter was helping to distract her.
